Over the next 15 to 20 years, the site will be transformed into a new 15 million ft2 (1.4 million m2) masterplanned community with a unique blend of residential, entertainment, business, retail and community uses. Planning permission was issued in early 2004 and will see the delivery of 10,000 new homes (including 38% affordable housing), the creation of 24,000 long-term job opportunities, new retail and community facilities and landscaped open space. AEG is responsible for building and operating The O2 (under the roof of the former Millennium Dome) and the immediate surrounding area as part of the redevelopment.
